I need to slow it down a little bit…

Sometimes I think that the reason i’ve gotten so big is partially because of the speed in which I eat. Sometimes it astounds me and others how fast I can scarf down a meal.

I think upbringing has something to do with it. It’s almost like it was a race growing up, because you had to finish first, just incase you wanted seconds. If you were too slow, there might not be any left.

Usually I am the first one finished at my dinner table.

I wonder if there are others like me?

Without a doubt. I’velearned to eat slow, and have slowed down naturally over the years, but eating fast, is definatley the biggest contributing factor in my weight gain over the years. You’ll do well, just realizing the changes you need to make, each day, will help make this life-change all that much easier. Best of luck to you :)

Yup, I used to eat super quick so I could get my share of seconds, my Dad used to eat them all if I was too slow. It used to drive my Mum mad, she’d wonder if I even tasted what I was eating. Sometimes I still catch myself doing it at work, but I think I’m pretty good when it comes to meals at home now…

Umm…yep…i was at that dinner table too! hee hee. I definitely feel like it was a race. Against who I don’t know….Dad? Myself? Lara? Who knows. I definitely think that is one thing we could all work on!

I used to race my sister to finish dinner - or even Coca-Colas. I used to tease her about it like “ha, ha, I finished first.” One day my mom finally told me “Lindsay, it’s not always good to finish first.” I was 10 years old and that thought seemed so new and ridiculous. These days, my sister still takes her time and eats small portions. Who do you think is smaller??? :) I’m trying to learn from her example now, and I’m the big sis!

Oh sure. Eating fast and large amounts of food. Like there is no tomorrow. Always eyeing the next bite, the next piece without paying attention to what is already in my mouth. Sometimes I felt like I was a seagall. LOL

Learning to eat slowly is a challenge. I taught myself by establishing a 15-minute rule. I stretch my meals and won’t be done until 15 minutes passed. This way I have to compete with the clock, I mean in reverse.

I ate really fast too..up until the last couple months I have learned to slow down and actually taste what I’m eating…that helps with now eating smaller portions…you have to make it last…lol

GREAT observation. I have learned to slow down by setting the fork down between bites and take a sip of water after every bite.

I also have learned to serve in the kitchen NOT at the table (too easy to get 2nds at the table), take a smallish serving, and WAIT a few minutes after finishing both my serving AND the water before deciding if I need anything more. Usually, I do not.

I think we’re all guilty of that. It’s easy to scarf it down and think I’m still hungry. One of my biggest problems is just thinking I want something. I don’t have to be hungry, I just want it. I’m working on that and on eating slower.

I was told at a WW meeting to always put your fork down between bites and chew your food. My husband and I have really been trying to do that. He is the fast eatter but I find myself eatting fast to keep up with him. Not a good thing.

Preaching to the choir here! What finally got me was when my son started to pick up the habit.

I have the same problem. I practically inhale my food and I am still hungry because I haven’t given my food time to digest and then I eat twice the amount of calories I should.
